With winter still trapping the northern hemisphere in its icy grip, February is a great time to take a break to warmer climes, although sunseekers will need to be a little creative when choosing a destination for their getaway. Even European hotspots like Cyprus and Malta rarely get hotter than the high teens. They’re pleasant enough, but hardly beach weather.
Fortunately, the Flexicover team are here to help. Read on for our choice of the top five locations to visit for sun, sea and sand this February.
Auckland, New Zealand
While it undoubtedly brings to mind images of stunning scenery a la Lord of the Rings, New Zealand is also a great hot-weather location, provided you visit at the right time. Head to the country's largest urban area of Auckland in February and you can revel in average temperatures of 24C - plenty hot enough to enjoy an evening promenade along Mission Bay Beach. As well as being Auckland's warmest month, February is one of the city's driest months, although being New Zealand, you should still expect a few raindrops during your trip.
Dominican Republic
While the temperature in the Dominican Republic remains toasty all year round, February is arguably the best time to visit this heavily rainforested, beach-fringed destination. The country, which shares the tropical island of Hispaniola with its neighbour Haiti, enjoys average daily maximums of 29C in February, while the average monthly rainfall of 36mm is the lowest of the year. This makes it perfect for lazing on some of the Dominican Republic's famously golden beaches. Be sure to check out the seemingly endless sands of Bávaro, the undeveloped and tranquil Playa Rincón and the palm-lined Playa Dorada.
Phuket, Thailand
The island of Phuket is a big hit with sun worshippers in any month. However, February is a particularly great choice for a visit thanks to average daily highs of 33C and average rainfall of 30mm: the driest month of the year. Not only that, but the sea temperature in February also reaches a toasty 29C, so there's really no excuse not to clock up the hours at the beach. And it helps that Phuket is home to some of Thailand's best beaches. If you're looking for a party, slather yourself in neon face paint and head to Paradise Beach; if you're after something a little more sedate, be sure to check out Kata Noi and Freedom Beach.
Miami, USA
Miami in February is almost too tempting. It’s a decent 20C, perfect for those who find they fry in the high temperatures. There’s plenty of sunny weather to help make beach time better, and one of the lowest levels of rain for the year. Best of all, this incredible weather is considered low season. Head over and reap the rewards of this; stay at chic hotels at knock-down prices, dine in restaurants that would otherwise have waiting lists, and have Miami Beach to yourself, relatively speaking. It’s also the perfect temperature to go sightseeing, with the art deco architecture one of its many highlights.
Guyana
Despite sharing the same paradisiacal climate as its Caribbean near-neighbours, Guyana remains largely unknown to tourists - perhaps because it's located on the continent of South America, rather than being one of the region's numerous tropical islands. Whatever the reason, we can't see Guyana remaining off the beaten track for long. Visit this February and you'll enjoy average high temperatures of 29C - perfect for kicking back, cocktail in hand, on the 90 miles of coastline that make up Shell Beach. There's little in the way of accommodation nearby, but you can book a blissful, back-to-nature night of camping on the pristine sands.
