Where to head for the heat in April

Across the UK, April temperatures average just 12C. And that’s if we don't get a cold snap. The double figures might prompt daffodils to burst into colour, and little lambs leap across the countryside, but it’s hardly beach weather. After waiting out a long, cold British winter, who can blame you if you’re super eager to feel the sun on your face? The good news is there are many (slightly more equator-adjacent) destinations around the globe where the fourth month of the year marks the beginning of summer proper. Whether you’re looking for a fun family holiday in the sun, a romantic couples’ trip where you never have to leave the beach, or a striking cultural backdrop for your envy-inducing Insta snaps, we’ve got you covered. Here’s the Flexicover team’s guide to where to find some sunshine in April. You lucky things.

Orlando, Florida A family holiday mecca, Orlando has likely been on the kids’ wish list since they learned to talk. And if you think they deserve a treat, then April is the perfect time to visit the theme park capital of the world. A typical April day in Orlando is hot and sunny, with average highs sitting at a toasty-yet-comfortable 28C. With around nine hours of sunshine each day, you’ll be able to enjoy long, idyllic Florida days of high-octane fun, followed by an al fresco meal with an entertaining show. Orlando’s larger-than-life theme parks include – but are not limited to – Walt Disney Resort, Universal Orlando, Universal’s Islands of Adventure, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Bequia, St Vincent and the Grenadines One of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ most perfect islands - and trust us, that’s saying something - Bequia provides an idyllic backdrop for a sun-drenched April vacay. At this time of year, the mercury hits highs of 29C. Looking forward to swimming or snorkelling in the aquamarine waves? Water temperatures in April sit at a bath-warm 27C. Lovely. You can expect almost six hours of sunshine a day, but there may be a couple of short-lived tropical showers too. But all in all, this is a dream destination if you’re looking for plenty of beach time and a beautifully slow pace of life.

Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina The good news is that if time or budget doesn’t allow, you don’t have to jet all the way to the Caribbean for a bit of April sunshine. At this time of year, the Mediterranean is starting to heat up too – and spellbinding Mostar is one of the warmest destinations. Mostar enjoys highs of 21C at this time of year: a sunny yet comfortable climate in which to explore the winding marble streets, historical monuments, and enchanting middle eastern culture of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s stand-out city. And if the weather gets too warm, you can always take a plunge in the sparkling Neretva River - just don’t do as the locals do, by jumping 24m from the city’s iconic bridge Stari Most.

Ko Lanta, Thailand This irresistible Thai island offers an oasis of calm away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. Ringed by endless beach bars and hammocks, Ko Lanta in April feels a world away from the grey weather at home. Leave your stresses behind as you explore the leafy island in highs of 34C, and enjoy midnight drinks in 25C lows. There are only six days of rainfall in this tropical destination in April, and here the warm showers don’t last long - you’ll be back on the beach in no time! Enjoy the unashamedly touristy bar culture, or head over to Lanta Old Town for a more authentic slice of Thai island life.

Neve Zohar, Israel You’ll find the Dead Sea at the lowest place on earth: 431m below sea level. Here, vibrant turquoise waters spill onto golden desert sands, and bathers flock to the mineral-rich waters for pampering. April is a great time to visit. Neve Zohar, one of Israel’s quieter Dead Sea resorts, enjoys highs of 31C at this time of year. The sea isn’t chilly in April either: with the water temperature averaging a soothing 23 C. Though it’s just 90 minutes away from Jerusalem, Neve Zohar has fewer than 100 permanent residents so travellers should always find accommodation in the strip of hotels nearby. They’ll will furnish you with all the amenities needed within this otherworldly landscape.

Wherever you plan on heading to over the coming months it’s good to know that Flexicover is committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure you are safe and secure 24 hours a day when away.
