Where’s hot in October

It’s about this time that sun-lovers will start to notice the nip in the air and the dreaded return to earlier evenings, meaning that we’re heading towards winter again. But that doesn’t mean we have to accept our fate without a fight. To elongate the summer, and enjoy those jacketless nights for a little longer, there’s always the option to hop on a flight to sunnier climes.

But where are the best places to go? The good news is that in October you don’t have to go far to get some solid sun action. Countries only a few hours flight from the UK are still basking in heat, making it a very affordable and tempting option – although there’s no reason not to head off on a long haul jaunt if you fancy it of course.

So from St Lucia to Croatia the Flexicover team has picked out its favourite spots to get some October sunshine.

Gran Canaria

You’ve got to love the Canary Islands for budget options when it comes to autumn heat. It’s still a roasting 27C on average in October so it’s well within reason to keep your favourite summer dress or shorts in play for a while longer. The better news is that in Gran Canaria the sea is at its warmest. That means if a bracing swim in the sea isn’t your idea of holiday fun, the bath-watery shoreline in October might be a different matter entirely – try it and judge for yourself. The island is ideal for holidaymakers in need of a post-summer fly’n’flop, but it’s worth venturing inland too. There are scenic trails up to Roque Nublo, while the dunes of Maspalomas offer dune-bashing and other outdoor pursuits.

St Lucia

There’s never a bad time to go to St Lucia, the relaxed Caribbean destination with plenty of personality. But there’s much to be said about going in October, when the off-peak prices are competitive and the temperature exceeds 30C – which is a relief from the peak temperatures of summer. While there may be the odd tropical shower these soon pass, allowing play to resume - and what play there is. Whether your preference is to lounge around the aquamarine beaches, indulge in fresh fish and Caribbean side dishes, or explore the French colonial town of Soufriere, it’s one of the most captivating islands of the Caribbean.

Bilbao, Spain

For a low-hassle, quick trip abroad to get a bit of heat, Bilbao is an encouraging option with average temps of 21C. Not only is it a low-cost destination with plenty of flight options, but even a short visit feels like a longer holiday. That’s because even in the busiest of times, this northern Spanish city continues at a relaxed pace so it’s impossible not to get caught up in the holiday vibe as soon as you touch down. There’s no beach in the city, but soak up the warmth in Doña Casilda Park, a gorgeous amenity with lakes, monuments and stunning greenery. Even the Guggenheim Museum is an ideal October destination – once you’ve seen the art, enjoy the riverside spaces outside.

Pula, Croatia

If 20C and plenty of sunshine sounds reasonable enough for October then Pula’s the right destination for you. Here it’s not only the balmy heat that’s the attraction. In keeping with the most famous parts of Croatia, it also has a magnificent old town which shows a little of the region’s history – start at Pula Arena, a remarkable amphitheatre that’s surprisingly intact and in use 2000 years after it was first built. Of course, there are cheap eats and local wines too, plus scenic walks to be found on the nearby island of Brijuni, adding to the allure of Pula.

Mauritius

October might be the beginning of our colder months but it’s exactly the right time to take a trip to Mauritius. Temperatures reach 24C but the rainy season is yet to come, making this month the sweet spot. While Mauritius’s many upscale resorts are ideal for honeymooners and those treating themselves to a luxe break, there’s accommodation for all budgets too. Try the B&B’s in Blue Bay – right near the airport – for a range of well-priced options. The area boasts good snorkelling opportunities (it’s home to the largest brain coral in the Indian Ocean), and it’s a short taxi ride to Mahebourg, a relaxed port town with fish restaurants and a popular promenade waiting for those who make the trip.

Wherever you head to this year it’s good to know that Flexicover Travel Insurance is committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure you are safe and secure 24 hours a day when away.
