With the mercury slowly creeping up in the UK come May, the good news is that heat-seeking holidaymakers have a much wider variety of destinations to choose from.
That’s because if our little island is warming up, more and more European destinations will be hotting up. Or alternatively, if you’re in the mood for a far-flung adventure in the Caribbean or Southeast Asia, by May, these destinations are sizzling.
Depending on where you’re heading you may need to take care with your packing choices though as temperatures can still fluctuate at this time of year - so be careful you don’t land in your shorts, t-shirt and sandals only to find out you should have brought a mid-weight jacket too!
The Flexicover team is on hand to offer to some sage advice - here are its favourite warm weather destinations for May.

Paphos, Cyprus
Cyprus boasts one of the Mediterranean’s warmest climates thanks to its proximity to North Africa. Visit Paphos in May, and you can expect ten hours of warm sunshine a day, with highs averaging around 24C and barely a drop of rain. Doesn’t sound too bad after a dreary UK winter, does it? Paphos is a good old-fashioned fly and flop destination that’s perfect for families, but there are plenty of incredible historical sites to explore too. Visit ancient archaeological sites like the Tombs of the Kings, or take a boat ride from the stunning Coral Bay before heading to Alykes Beach for some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

Key West, Florida, US
Fancy a trip to the good old US of A? Key West, which perches on Florida’s southernmost point, averages daily highs of 30C at this time of year. Even the lows are high, averaging around 25C. Phew! Key West is the perfect destination for snorkelling and diving, with incredible coral to be explored. Things to do include visiting the most southerly point on the continental US, located just 90 miles from Cuba, and taking a trip to Ernest Hemingway’s old abode. Key West is less known for its beaches, but there are a handful of sandy public beaches if you do fancy a day or two of relaxation in between soaking up the evocative culture of this iconic destination.

Pamukkale, Turkey
Pamukkale’s highs in May reach 27C, and average around 25C. If that’s not hot enough for you, just take a trip to the city’s otherworldly thermal pools, where temperatures start at 35C! Sometimes referred to as the ‘cotton castle’, the azure and white Travertine pools are aeons old and incredibly striking. Visitors are welcome to spend some time hanging out in the more temperate of these pools - you may well have seen your favourite travel influencers posing there on Instagram. A beach holiday this is not: Pamukkale is some way from the coast, but why not take a chance and explore a different, once-in-a-lifetime sort of landscape?

Nevis, The Caribbean
Embrace the super laid-back Caribbean vibe on Nevis, which hits highs of 30C during May and boasts a toasty average temperature of 27C. This tiny island is the epitome of old fashioned Caribbean, away from the bustle of its sister island St Kitts. There are rules against swearing and no bouncing clubs - the nightlife here is to be found in charming beach shacks. If you fancy getting away from the idyllic coastline, take a nature walk to the verdant mountain peak, spotting monkeys swinging from trees along the way. However, as the island is only 13km long and 10km wide, you’ll never be too far from enjoying a rum punch on the beach.

Hoi An, Vietnam
Fancy a far-flung Southeast Asian destination but not sure where to start? The idyllic Vietnamese city of Hoi An enjoys average temperatures of 34C in May, and it also happens to be in the dry season. It’s more relaxing than other parts of Vietnam; most of the resorts have private beaches and swanky swimming pools, while in the historic town centre you’ll find colonial architecture strung with colourful lanterns. High-end restaurants dot the riverfront, with authentic Vietnamese cuisine across the river into An Hoi. What’s more, Da Nang, with its famed Marble Mountains, is just a 40-minute drive away, and the iconic Hai Van Pass - as seen in the Vietnam Top Gear Special - is just a little further afield.
Wherever you plan on heading to this year it’s good to know that Flexicover Travel Insurance is committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure you’re safe and secure 24 hours a day when away.
