January is the perfect time to start, especially as the weather here is freezing and everyone's too busy trying to be healthy to go out for dinner. So treat yourself by leaving it all behind for a week or two and jet off for some much-needed winter sun. But where to go for guaranteed hot weather at the start of the year?

Playa Blanca, Lanzarote
You don't need to leave Europe behind to enjoy balmy weather in January. In Playa Blanca, one of the Canary Islands' most popular resorts, you can expect average daily high temperatures of almost 21C, which is still plenty warm enough to slip into your finest swim gear and hit the beach. Although January is one of Lanzarote's wetter months, rainfall is still infrequent - with an average of 22mm throughout the month - and almost always passes quickly. Couple all of that with quieter beaches, and January is actually a fantastic month to visit Playa Blanca.
Cape Verde
Verde means green. Green means go. Surely that's all the convincing you need to visit this stunning Atlantic Ocean archipelago? If the name alone isn't convincing enough, you'll be persuaded by the weather. Although January is Cape Verde's coldest month of the year, the average daily high temperature is still 25C. It can get a little windy, but with just 3mm of rain in the entire month, you won't need to pack your umbrella and bright yellow mac. The temperature of the sea is also pleasantly toasty at this time of year, so you'll be able to take full advantage of the nation’s turquoise waters.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio de Janeiro literally has ‘January’ in its name, so what better month to visit Brazil's most famous city? At the start of the year, you can look forward to highs of 32C, and although rainfall is pretty high at 114 mm, storms tend to be intense and relatively short-lasting. Or to put it another way, the weather will be hot and dry enough for you to clock up lots of basking time on Copacabana Beach. You'll get plenty of bang for your buck in January too, as prices are cheaper ahead of carnival season in February and March.
Zanzibar, Tanzania
January is one of the hottest months to visit the tropical archipelago of Zanzibar, situated 12 miles off the coast of Tanzania. The days are long and sunny, with an average high temperature of 32C. For many, it’s an excuse to do nothing more energetic than a slow walk to the beach bar for another cocktail. But if you're after something a little more active, January also offers superb conditions for diving or snorkelling, with the sea at its clearest at this time of year. So zip up your wetsuit and keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, turtles and, if you’re lucky, manta rays.
Muscat, Oman
Average high temperatures in Oman's capital city reach a preposterous 40C in May and June, so do yourself a favour and visit in January instead. It might be the coolest month of the year, but the average high of 25C makes it far more tolerable for us Brits to explore the historic Old Town and enjoy the beautiful Qantab Beach. If you fancy getting out of the city, head down the coast to Ras Al Jinz, the easternmost point of the Arabian Peninsula, and you may even spot some green turtles at this time of year.
