If you're anything like us, the beloved childhood film Bambi will have left you constantly associating the words ‘April’ and ‘showers’. In reality, it's actually the second driest month in the UK - but why take the chance? Escape the nearly-but-not-quite-there weather by booking yourself a trip someplace hot. And with the Easter school holidays falling in April, it's the perfect opportunity for a big family getaway.
While there are lots of far flung destinations to choose from, most of the Euro-zone is still heating up but there are a few options to consider if you fancy a break closer to home - you just need to know where to look.
To save you the time and effort, the Flexicover team has rounded up its choice of the five best temperature topping places to visit in April.
Oranjestad, Aruba
In Oranjestad, the colonial-era capital of Caribbean paradise Aruba, average high temperatures climb to a toasty 31C in April. That might sound a little stifling to even the most ardent sun worshipper, but the gentle trade winds at this time of year ensure that you'll still be able to keep your cool. If you're looking for an alternative to the traditional beach break, consider a stay at the Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino, which boasts a private island where you can even paddle with flamingos. Visit towards the end of the month and you might be lucky enough to catch the King's Day festivities on April 27th, when parades hit the streets and special menus are laid on in the capital's many restaurants.
Cairo, Egypt
Africa's largest city usually enjoys a baking desert climate. Happily, April is more comfortable - you can expect temperatures to hover around 28C, with ten hours of sunshine a day. That means you'll be able to enjoy the sun while visiting the ancient Pyramids of Giza, before cooling off in the artefact-packed Egyptian Museum. Cairo is inland, but if a beach break is what you’re after this April, it’s a 90-minute drive to laidback Ain El-Sokhna on the banks of the Gulf of Suez. It’s ideal as a day trip, and you can kick back and relax on the sandy beach, or stay active with windsurfing, deep sea diving or kitesurfing.
Valletta, Malta
The capital of Malta is proof that good things come in small packages. The diminutive city sees just three days of rain and average high temperatures of 20C throughout April - hot enough to spend a few days soaking up the many historic sites in sunshiney bliss. Europe's 2018 Capital of Culture is home to a dizzying array of historic attractions, from its golden-stone fortress walls to its numerous 16th-century mansions, many of which now house upscale bars, restaurants and hotels. Fancy a day trip out of Valletta? Check out the Three Cities of Birgu, Senglea, and Cospicua for a glimpse into authentic Maltese life as it has been lived for centuries.
Maspalomas, Gran Canaria
Perched on the southern coast of Gran Canaria, the resort town of Maspalomas is a budget pick for an April getaway, with average high temperatures reaching a balmy 22C. The town is renowned for its expansive coastal dunes, which make up a spectacular nature reserve housing palm groves, lagoons and numerous bird species. For something a little more up-tempo, head to the nightlife hotspot of Playa del Inglés, which is dotted with tourist pubs, boutiques, craft shops and restaurants. Expect the beach to be a little quieter in April than during the peak tourist months, when you'll be fighting for a prime sun lounger.
Galle, Sri Lanka
The historic walled city of Galle is a delight at any time of year, with average high temperatures never dipping below 29C. Visit in April and you'll be rewarded with temperatures of over 30C - plus you'll be in town before monsoon season hits in May. Sun seekers need look no further than Unawatuna, the picture of tropical bliss with its golden, palm-fringed sands. It's a great spot for snorkelling and diving if you're into something a little more strenuous than just lazing on the beach. Fancy escaping the sun? Head to the evocative winding roads of the walled fort. Here you can revel in Galle’s Dutch colonial architecture and indulge your sweet tooth at one of its many ice cream parlours.
