Where to head for heat this December

Are you dreaming of a not so white Christmas? Would you rather be enjoying the heat of the sun over the heat of the kitchen come December 25th?

If you’re keen to experience a different type of yuletide this year there’s lots of warm winter sun destinations to choose from. Why not swap traditional turkey for a delicious curry and eat it amidst the otherworldly mountains of tranquil Kerala in India? Or give your family the unforgettable festive gift of a Christmas safari amidst Namibia’s rolling sand dunes? Alternatively, swap the stress of your Christmas day kitchen for relaxing on one of Costa Rica or Fiji’s paradise beaches, or tangoing the night away with locals in seductive Buenos Aires.

If that’s piqued your interest here's the Flexicover team’s guide on where to go for winter sun in December. And remember - wherever you choose to go, Santa will still be able to find you!

Kerala, India

India is a safe bet for December sunshine - but the hustle and bustle of Delhi or Agra may not be what you’re looking for, if a relaxing end-of-year holiday is the objective. Why not consider the Indian state of Kerala instead? This southern province is more languid than much of the north and boasts highs of 32C in December. The lows won’t have you reaching for your duffle coat either, sitting at a comfortable 23C. The weather is perfect for making the most of Kerala’s idyllic landscapes, which range from sandy beaches to jaw-dropping mountains. Visit Eravikulam National Park in the Kannan Devan Hills to see wild goats in their natural habitats, or take a safari in Thekkady, home to elephants, tigers and more.

Namibia

Sometimes labelled ‘Africa for beginners’, Namibia is one of the continent’s most impressive destinations, and December is a great time to visit weather-wise, with blazing heat and the odd tropical storm providing a dramatic backdrop for your trip. Daytime temperatures usually hover between 24 and 28C, with sunny blue skies. If the skies cloud over, a short tropical shower usually follows, clearing the sky once more in time for a magical evening of star-gazing. The ethereal sand dunes of the world’s oldest desert, the Namib, run along the country’s Atlantic coastline, while inland, a string of mountains provide jaw-dropping peaks and canyons. Take an unforgettable safari to spot giraffes and rhinos against a backdrop of rolling dunes.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

If you’re going to take a city break, you might as well go big with one of the world’s most vibrant capitals. While your friends are visiting snowy European cities and traversing Christmas markets, you can tango through the night and well into the next day in Buenos Aires, which positively vibrates with Latin passion. Plus you won’t even need a light jacket - the Argentine capital maintains highs of 28C throughout December. Pay attention to the architecture as you stroll through the city; magnificent French and Italian-style buildings line the streets. While you’re there, take up a tango class - the seductive dance style originated in the city’s bordellos - and catch a show to watch the athletic professionals do it right.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s high season starts in mid-December and lasts until April. If you’re heading to the Costa Rican capital of San Jose, you can expect highs of 25C, while the pacific coast sees highs of around 28C in December. Vitally, mid-December marks the end of the rainy season, so you should be able to stay dry while you enjoy the beaches and rainforests of this unforgettable country. Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio - home to white-sand beaches, coral reefs and verdant rainforest terrain - is particularly enjoyable at this time of year, with 28C average highs on the coast. Enjoy hiking through its varied 680 hectares from the coast to the mountains, before enjoying a well-earned beach day.

Fiji

To go all-out at Christmas, spend it on a 300-island-strong archipelago that regularly tops bucket lists. Not only is Fiji a pure paradise destination, but it boasts highs of 29C in December, with lows hovering at a comfortable 22C: perfect beach weather. The stunning nation is famed for its crystalline lagoons and vibrant coral reefs. Beach lovers should stay on the islands of Mamanucas and Yasawas, where the sublime sand and sea will require #nofilter in your Insta snaps. Travellers who like to stay active should head to the island of Taveuni - the Garden Island - where ridiculously luscious scenery makes an irresistible backdrop for a hike.

Wherever you’re planning on heading to this winter it’s good to know that Flexicover is committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure you are safe and secure 24 hours a day when away.
