Group holidays are a case of the more, the merrier. It’s a delight to swap and shift company over the course of a few days and spend quality time with friends in a different locale. But it also means that the destination has to be just right. Beach holidays might leave some of the party cold, and others might not appreciate activity holidays from the starting line.
For jam-packed group holidays that suit a wide range of tastes, budgets, interests and foibles whilst not generic enough to bore everyone, the Flexicover team has pulled together a list of its five favourite destinations that should keep everyone happy.
Cascais, Portugal

Who’d turn down a group trip to Cascais? Especially as it’s easy to get to as nearby Lisbon is serviced by national and low-cost carriers from a range of UK airports. Once there, for those that enjoy sightseeing, it’s a convenient starting point for Sintra, the Unesco Heritage Site that features Pena Palace as one of its many historic palaces rising high within its verdant hills. Those who enjoy relaxing breaks might prefer to spend their days lingering by its marina, where freshly-caught seafood can be enjoyed with a crisp glass of Portugal’s famous vinho verde. Delicioso.
Cancun, Mexico

For those whose budgets stretch to transatlantic flights, look no further than Cancun in Mexico. It’s primarily known for its vibrant nightlife, with all-inclusive hotels and nightclubs a plenty. But that’s not the only reason to visit as the beach – think perfect white sand and warm, refreshing waters – is a week-long attraction in itself. For those that like more substance, the Mayan wonders of Tulum and Chichen Itza are a car ride away. Mexican food is also a draw. The prominence of beans and avocado means it’s easy to find a delicious, nutritious vegan meal, and full tummies equals happy groups.
Bilbao, Spain

In Bilbao, sunworshippers will find their spiritual home, but there are plenty of other reasons to pay a visit. The Guggenheim Museum is a must-see; the astounding-looking gallery holds works from Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Anish Kapoor and Jean-Michel Basquiat among its permanent exhibition. If that doesn’t suit, surely a visit to the vineyards of the Rioja-producing region will entice others. For individuals who like their holidays on the spontaneous side, a mooch about Casco Viejo and La Ribera, its old town and its mammoth-sized indoor market respectively, are certain to uncover a few digressions to write home about.
Roca Llisa, Ibiza

Not long after word got out that Ibiza was the place to go to party, the allure of the quiet side of the island also became known. The rule of thumb is that party-goers should head to the west side of the island, particularly San Antonio, where many of the super-clubs are located. While for fab sunsets and a calmer atmosphere the south or west sides are more appropriate. Mixed groups will be best off in the beach resort of Roca Llisa as it offers luxury self-catering apartments and has two golf courses nearby.
Helsinki, Finland

The Finnish capital of Helsinki is an interesting all-round option; their culture is different enough to the Brits to make every interaction a novel experience for the world traveller. Got a shopaholic or an art-lover in the group? Make a beeline for the design district, a large area that brings together creatives of all disciplines in one vibrant place with craft stores, independent co-ops and antiques. Gastronomes will be equally delighted with the Kallio district, brimful of contemporary restaurants that showcase inventive and globally-influenced Finnish cuisine. If there’s a pal who wants to opt out, a visit to a Finnish sauna is best done alone anyway: locals frown upon bathing suits!
