Romance is not just for Valentine’s Day. Amidst the splendour of the world’s most romantic destinations, that argument about whose turn it was to put the bins out can be left firmly in the past, and you can get back to falling in love all over again.
You don’t need to wait for the summer sun to inject some more passion into your lives either, with many destinations only ramping up the romance as the mercury drops. And away from Valentine's, there’s better value for money – so it can be spent showering them with the bells and the whistles of a holiday instead.
If you’re after some much-deserved quality time, the Flexicover team has compiled a list of its favourite destinations for couples - from the fairytale to the adventurous - that remain romantic year-round.

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is often presented as a more tranquil alternative to India - and it’s certainly more romantic. In peaceful Sri Lanka, you can stroll through the tea plantations of Ella, take a beautiful train journey through the hill country, and watch dusky pink sunsets from your colonial balcony in picturesque Galle. And don’t forget to take a couple’s yoga class in mountainous surroundings for all those #relationshipgoals Insta likes. The perfect destination for any adventurous couple, there’s no bad time of year to visit Sri Lanka. The monsoon hits between May and August, but in this tropical destination, heavy rain just adds to the ethereal atmosphere.

Amarante, Portugal
Located in the district of Porto in northern Portugal, Amarante is a romantic destination waiting to be discovered - and love sits at its very core. Stroll through the beautiful Romanesque streets to the church of Sao Goncalo where, legend has it, single women will find their true love simply by touching the statue’s tunic and then eating an interestingly-shaped biscuit. But if you’ve found The One, your time is freed up to indulge by the beautiful port, with cheese and meats aplenty and vinho verde from the nearby Douro Valley. In summer, the temperature hits around 25C, but visit in wintertime and you’ll be enchanted by the festive atmosphere and cosy nooks in this endlessly charming setting.

Venice, Italy
What destination could possibly inspire passion more than the home city of Casanova himself? Casanova proved to be such a…Casanova that he was imprisoned in the infamous Doge’s palace, which you can now visit. Or give yourself over to the beautiful romantic cliches of Venice: gondolier rides, sumptuous canal-side dinners, and wine at Cafe Florian: the oldest coffeehouse in the world, and where Casanova himself used to drink. In summer, the temperature climbs close to 30C, while in winter, fog rolls over the islands and, with fewer tourists, visitors get to see a more authentic version of this world famous city.

Kyoto, Japan
For a bit of eastern magic, create an unforgettable memory at one of Kyoto’s ‘power spots’, which are believed to endow visitors with good love luck. Wander the path of love to Kifune Shrine, or walk with your eyes closed between the two ‘stones of love’ at Jishu Shrine, and your love life should reach fairytale heights. Alternatively, stroll along the beautiful Shirakawa River, where in spring, the Sakura flowers bloom. In autumn, the trees of leafy Arashiyama transform the landscape with striking reds and golds. No matter the time of year, nature-lovers will be captivated by a romantic meander through the Bamboo Forest - one of Japan’s most iconic scenes.

Ljubljana, Slovenia
What better destination to visit with your sweetheart than Ljubljana: the so-called ‘City of Love’. With baroque architecture that conceals numerous stone dragons, and a spellbinding castle sat high on a hill, the Slovenian capital could provide the backdrop to your very own fairytale. Catch a funicular up to the castle, where you can enjoy a meal with panoramic views of the city, or take a sunset cruise complete with wine and music. Like many European cities, Ljubljana sparkles under the summer sun, and is positively enchanting in winter. If you’re visiting in the festive season, wrap up warm and meander through the twinkling Christmas fair, a warm bevvy in hand.
