Shiver me timbers, it’s that time again. No, not ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ - that’s in September - but another instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean, with its latest film titled Dead Men Tell No Tales about to be released to the silver screen.
With the spotlight turned on this stunning part of the world once more, it’s tempting to be drawn to visiting the Caribbean. But as you really are spoilt for choice with some of the globe’s best beaches and luxury resorts to choose from where should you bestow your precious loot (well earnings!).

Eagle Beach’s ivory-white sand is soft to the touch, but it’s hard not to be tempted by the bath-water blue waters that redefines a dip in the sea. For a change of scenery, venture to the outdoor pool, which houses an in-built whirlpool for added luxury. Designed with romancing couples in mind, the resort provides a relaxed atmosphere for socialising: enjoy their happy hour with tropical cocktails and a steel band, or after dinner, catch a movie on the beach under the sparkling night time sky.
East Winds, St Lucia
At this top-end all-inclusive resort, Champagne is served every night, water sports are actively encouraged, and bungalow-style rooms make for spacious accommodation – this is the type of decadence that comes as standard at East Winds, a four-star hotel with a five-star offering. A jewel in the crown for St Lucia, one of the most verdant Caribbean islands, it earns top marks on all fronts – particularly the warm service that ensures guests want for nothing.
Melia Cayo Coco, Cuba
Trading restrictions mean that the cuisine in Cuba is often good but not gourmet, but what the five-star resort of Melia Cayo Coco lacks in ingredients, it makes up for in wow factor. The adults-only hotel is linked to Cuba’s mainland by a man-made road over the sea, but it’s not only the location that sets it apart. Propped up on stilts over its saltwater lagoon, sturdy bungalows offer a unique experience as well as complete privacy for honeymooning couples. On the other side, beach-facing suites offer stylish décor and modern-day amenities. So it’s a tough pick between the two, but at least all guests enjoy the full breadth of the expansive grounds: think giant outdoor pool, picture-perfect beach, Colonial-style bars and heaving coconut trees - and that’s only part of the scenery.
Half Moon, Jamaica
The only difficult thing about Half Moon’s enticing beach is the range of other activities available, which marks out this 400-acre resort as one of Jamaica’s finest. How is one supposed to find time to relax when there’s a full equestrian centre to explore? That’s right – the Half Moon features a range of horses for dressage, show-jumping and a mini-polo field. If preferred, the 18-hole golf course is also the home of the Jamaican Open. Or for an afternoon dip, try out its Olympic-sized swimming pool – one of three pools provided to cool off from the hot Jamaican sun. With all that activity, the evening offers a chance to unwind and make use of its six bars. And it would be remiss to leave without trying its famed Sugar Mill restaurant, offering modern Jamaican cuisine in an upscale setting.
