Rocky Mountains, US
Couples holidays don't have to be all about lounging on sun-soaked beaches. Jet off to the Rocky Mountains – spanning the north west of the States - to enjoy all the adventurous activities you've ever dreamed of, set against perhaps the most dramatic scenery in the US. The weather can get pretty chilly here, but you won't feel the cold while you're snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, mountain biking and dog-sledding your way through the rugged terrain. You can also choose from more than 350 hiking routes, ranging from lakeside strolls to steep, peak-traversing trails. Plus, the cold gives you the perfect excuse to snuggle up with your other half at the end of the day.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania
Love animals almost as much as you love your partner? Then the perfect escape for you could be to head to the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. Formed when a huge volcano collapsed in on itself two to three million years ago, it's about 12 miles wide and boasts an unforgettable array of flora and fauna. The enclosed environment of the crater means you're all-but guaranteed to see large concentrations of animals, from herds of grazing buffalo to black rhino and some of Africa's largest elephants. While there's no accommodation in the park itself, you can stay at one of the lodges perched on the crater rim. They invariably offer spectacular views, and their proximity to the park means you spend less time on transport and more time on safari.

Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica
It's fair to say that nowhere in the world offers a ziplining experience quite like Manuel Antonio National Park. Once you've been strapped in, you'll soar through the jungle canopy at a rate of knots, coming face to face with toucans and monkeys. You might even spot a slow-moving sloth along the way, although it's unlikely they'll be able to keep up with you. Although Manuel Antonio is Costa Rica's smallest national park, there are dozens of options for ziplining adventures, so simply choose the one that appeals most. The park also boasts several secluded sandy beaches – providing the perfect spot for relaxing with your other half between all that adventure.

Riviera Maya, Mexico
Although best known for its numerous upscale all-inclusive resorts, Mexico's Riviera Maya is a must-visit for adventurous travellers thanks to its proximity to Rio Secreto. Translating to Secret River, it encompasses a seemingly never-ending series of underground caves and rivers, through which you can snorkel and swim to your heart's content. Even the most active couples will be forced to pause and take in the dramatic stalagmites, stalactites and bright aquamarine waters that give the caves an otherworldly feel. But that's not all. Riviera Maya boasts plenty more activities, from mountain biking through the jungle to diving within coral reefs.

Atacama Desert, Chile
If none of these other locations are quite unique enough for your getaway, allow us to recommend the Atacama Desert. This 600-mile stretch of Pacific-hugging coastline is a veritable playground for adventure lovers. Personalised excursions include horseback riding, desert biking and hiking through the rugged landscape, while adrenaline junkies will get a kick from sand-boarding down the towering dunes of Death Valley. Don't miss the chance to witness the sunset at Moon Valley, named after its spookily lunar landscape, and take the time to explore Aldea de Tulor, an ancient village that was buried under the desert sands until its excavation in 1982. Despite its isolated location, the desert also boasts plenty of high-end accommodation, so there's no need to sacrifice that all-important romantic luxury.
