The UK avoided its usual tepid summer this year, enjoying multiple heatwaves which of course meant that instead of moaning about how poor the weather was, we still made our feelings heard about the fact that it was far too hot!
Complaints are no doubt being regretted now that the country has returned to its usual state of mixed weather and colder days, and we've ditched our summer clothes for jackets and jumpers.
If you weren't quite ready to say goodbye to the sizzling temperatures, however, there are plenty of destinations where you can forget about the undoubtedly dreary British weather to come.
Here are the Flexicover team's favourite destinations for following the sunshine to warmer climes.
Galle, Sri Lanka
The colonial city of Galle is a dream for travel enthusiasts – it has it all, including warm winter temperatures. High temps are a constant 30C throughout the winter months, with January and February the driest months of the year. Plus the waters of the Indian Ocean remain bath-water warm at this time too, making it ideal for water activities like surfing and diving. On terra firma, there’s its Dutch history to explore, including a beautiful fort, narrow, cobbled streets filled with craft stores and an array of imposing churches and mosques. After all the sightseeing and water activities, there’s no better place to sit back and people-watch with a nice cup of Ceylon tea.
Oman, UAE
The allure of toasty temperatures is a big draw to the up-and-coming destination of Oman. With a desert-like climate, daytime in the capital of Muscat varies between 22C to 31C from November to March, so no coat required. Its picture-perfect beaches are the best place to make the most of the sunny weather - Zighy Bay is home to a number of plush resorts that offer the best of Middle Eastern hospitality and cuisine. For more active visitors there’s plenty of culture in the capital of Muscat and in more rural areas the arid, mountainous landscape offers some superb daytrips you won’t want to miss.
Valletta, Malta
This year, Valletta takes the mantle of European Capital of Culture, which involved the opening of Muża, its new art gallery. But there’s another reason to visit in our colder months. It enjoys mild temps of early 20C in November and a manageable 17C in December, low rainfall and longer days than at home ¬– perfect for exploring the area. As well as coastal resorts that are indulgently quiet at this time of year, Malta’s capital city of Valletta offers architecture and history that bring its past to life. And no visitor should leave without seeing St John’s Co-Cathedral, featuring incredible decorations from Caravaggio among others.
Amman, Jordan
While on your search for stronger sun it's no bad thing to experience some of the world's greatest treasures, and you can find plenty of them in Jordan. Using the capital of Amman as a base - which enjoys average daytime temperatures of 19C and 14C in November and December respectively - it's easy to take a day trip to the famous Petra, a city carved from pinkish stone making it one of the most striking wonders of the world. After experiencing its marvels, take a dip in the Dead Sea - it's just an hour's drive from the capital and offers the once-in-a-lifetime experience of floating on the salty waters, while viewing the Israeli skyline on the other side.
Tenerife, Spain
If you want a sunny break without having to travel too far then you'll struggle to beat Tenerife - a four and a half hour flight from the UK. The good news is you'll find temperatures in the mid-20s lasting well into the autumn, with November seeing averages of 24C and December 23C. In fact as the volcanic island remains warm the whole year round you can happily swim, sunbathe, and enjoy trips to the famous Mount Teide National Park whenever you head there.
