It’s not always convenient to take a week or two week holiday. Take a look at some of our recommendations if you only have a few days to spare for your trips this year.
For many, the rigmarole and routine of daily life places a lot of stress on our bodies and minds and so we seek time away to do what we can to reinvigorate ourselves. Given the way schedules work out, it can be difficult to find an opening to take the traditional ‘two weeks off’ and, actually, this may not be the best way to relax. Often several short breaks spaced out over the year can be better for you than taking all your holiday in one lump.
As well as having to take less time off at once, these breaks offer the chance to experience a variety of cultures throughout the year and can be happily combined with anniversaries, birthdays or special occasions like St. Valentine’s Day. With many such journeys being no more than four hours from home city to hotel, this leaves plenty of time to enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of somewhere new and revel in a change of environment!
Naples, Italy
The biggest city in southern Italy is one of the oldest and most artistic in the country, with a charm and vibrancy second to none. Surrounded by beautiful waters, Naples offers breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Spend a few days here and explore 27 centuries of history, including the historic city centre, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through crowded streets and piazzas, indulge in delicious food like Neapolitan pizza, pasta and seafood or stop to watch the world go by with an espresso - just as the locals do. As short breaks go, the Calabrian capital should be high on your list!
Las Vegas, USA
Whilst hopping the Atlantic isn’t everyone’s idea of a short break, given the city’s vibrancy, you may not need more than a long weekend here. If you’re someone who recharges their batteries on bright lights, high energy and adrenaline thrills then this over the top, round the clock playground is for you! Experience huge hotels with their own shopping arcades, some of the biggest casinos in the world, dine out at fabulous restaurants and dance at trendy nightclubs. Plus the breathtaking Grand Canyon isn’t far away for adventure of a different kind. There’s never a dull moment here; this could be that thrilling break you’ve been waiting for!
Sintra, Portugal
Just outside Lisbon sits the beautiful mountain town of Sintra. With fairy tale landscapes, mist-soaked forests, turreted palaces and castle ruins, this charming town makes an ideal and romantic destination for a great short break. Cooling pine trees cover the hills of the Serra de Sintra and stunning views of the historic coastline make it a remarkable national treasure - its architecture, natural beauty and literary importance all contributed to making the Cultural Landscape of Sintra a World Heritage Site. Visit the three magnificent palaces (Palácio Nacional de Sintra, Castelo dos Mouros and the mountaintop Palácio Nacional da Pena), marvel at their wonders and let your worries float away!
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Set midway between the Alps and the Adriatic, the Slovenian capital is one of Europe’s greenest capitals and offers a wonderful blend of modern and historical culture. The old town is traffic-free beneath the watchful presence of a castle that boasts amazing views of the city below - if you’re feeling fit you can even walk all the way to the top. The Ljubljanica River runs through the heart of the city which is great for pedestrians and cyclists as well as leisurely tourist boat rides. Walking is probably the best way to get around this city of just under 300,000 people and is the best way to explore the parks and open expanses like the University Botanic Gardens. For a weekend of green, go Slovene!
Amsterdam, the Netherlands
The Dutch capital is a tried and true short break destination - never far away and always something to do, no matter how many times you may visit. The city welcomes tourists with around 85 museums to explore, wonderful historic buildings, a wealth of retail therapy or just relaxing walks and cycling in the canal district, a World Heritage Centre in its own right. And if nightlife is your thing, fantastic restaurants and clubs, hosting some of Europe’s top DJs, abound. Vivacious and charming, Amsterdam is a modern destination that’s still in touch with its past to make it one sparkling gem of a holiday!
