Last minute European breaks for late May bank holiday

Now that the spate of spring bank holidays are coming to an end we should probably use our precious time over the next long weekend to get that garage sorted, clear out the attic, visit family…or go on a cheeky break.

Whether you’re keen to take in different terrains and scenes, explore new cities or chase the sun around Europe now that the days are really heating up, there’s a whole host of exciting options to suit soloists, couples, families and friends for the final bank holiday in May.

With impressively-priced holiday packages helping to seal the deal it might well be more affordable than you think. We’ve scoured the internet and done the legwork to find some options it would be hard to refuse – and remember, we’ve no vested interested in these other than to find you a bargainous holiday you won’t forget in a hurry.

Here’s what’s on the Flexicover team’s bank holiday travel wishlist.

All-inclusive in Malta – four nights from £508 per person

If, after a busy start to the year, you’re only just able to fly and flop, an all-inclusive break in Malta is just the ticket. Kick back in a pool-view room at the award-winning db Seabank Resort and Spa, or head down and order an inclusive drink to enjoy on the loungers. When it’s time for a bite, take your fill at the buffet restaurant, and when you want to relax for the night, take a beer and pick a lane in the hotel’s very own bowling alley. Jet2Holidays have a deal from Wednesday 22 to Sunday 26 May that’s £508 per person sharing, flights from Manchester including luggage, transfers plus meals and drinks included too.

Room only in France – two nights from £332 per person

Ever wanted to stay in a palace? Now’s your chance as the extravagant L'Imperial Palace is part of a luxury package to the stunning south east of France. It’s perched on the border of Annecy Lake, in walking distance of the town, and there are breath-taking views of the Alps in the distance. With wellness facilities like a spa and indoor swimming pool, plus tranquil gardens in which to luxuriate, two nights is all you’ll need to make you feel brand new. Flights are from Birmingham from Monday 27 May to Wednesday 29 May and costs £664 from EasyJet, making it a worthy reward if you did want to spend some of your bank holiday weekend clearing out the attic.

Half-board in Greece – seven nights from £287 per person

For those looking for a last-minute bargain the Anastasia Hotel in Crete is worth a look. It has an impressive four and half out of five rating on TripAdvisor, thanks to its charming look, personable service and great location. When you’re after a change from the R&R, the Bay of Malia and the town of Stalida is a minute’s walk away, and there’s a bus stop just outside for day trips to Hersonnisos and Heraklion. A week half-board from 21 May, including flights from Bristol Airport, transfers and luggage is a remarkable £574 for two from Thomas Cook.

Self-catering in Croatia – three nights from £647 per person

With Game of Thrones fever in the air, it’s the right time to take a visit to Dubrovnik. Even for non-fans, it’s a charming coastal city that has plenty to offer, from the famous old-world streets to the city beach of Banje. To enjoy the coastal air while being a quick drive or bus ride away from the old town, Villa Valjalo is an ideal option. You won’t have to book more than a day off work for a trip, as a three-night stay from Friday 24 May comes in at £2,311 for a family of four in a roomy, sea view two-bed apartment. This ATOL-protected holiday from TravelRepublic includes British Airways flights from London Gatwick.

Room only in Italy – four nights for £226 per person

The tragic fire of Notre Dame should make us realise that we can’t take Europe’s beautiful history and sights for granted. So if you’ve always been meaning to check out the ancient wonders found in Rome, what are you waiting for? Step into the past with a visit to the Colosseum, Pantheon and Forum, while digging into Italian favourites for lunch and dinner (restaurant-wise it’s hard to go wrong here). Staying at the chic design hotel of Caravel on Via Cristoforo Colombo – which has a solid four stars on TripAdvisor - Holiday Pirates feature it with flights from Manchester for £226 per person leaving on Friday 24 May.
