As holidays are meant to be a break from the hum-drum of everyday life, it’s no wonder we look to celebrities for holiday inspiration. For if they live their lives in glitz and glamour, their happy place must really be something special. Yes, they may well stay in ultra-luxurious retreats where their every whim is catered for, but when they’re sipping a cocktail watching the sun go down, it’s the very same view as ours.
Whether a celeb is a regular returner, or even if they’ve declared a location as a spiritual home, the Flexicover team has picked five places where you may find the great and the good clocking in and checking out. Tempted to join them?
Lake Trasimeno, Italy
Lake Como in Italy has long been famous for attracting celebrities like George Clooney and Madonna. But further south in the hilly region of Umbria, Lake Trasimeno is a lesser known gem, equally loved by A-listers including Bridget Jones Diary actor Colin Firth. He has a second home and married his Italian wife in the area. It’s easy to see why. The lake and its shores are a large expanse of tranquillity, dotted by olive groves and white water lilies. It’s the perfect playground for those who enjoy gentle exploring: caves, islands, castles and ancient monasteries await curious minds.
Éze, France
Fans of Irish band U2 might spot lead singer Bono while holidaying in The French Rivera, or Côte d’Azur. The famous musician owns a mansion in Éze, a charming town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea famed for its medieval history and Friedrich Nietzsche’s trail. Legend says Nietzsche found inspiration in his daily walks along the French Rivera, and we expect it’s equally inspiring for Bono and its other visitors too. A coastal jewel, the village is located near both Nice and Monaco, with plenty of public buses negating the need for a car.
Aspen, Colorado
American actress Kate Hudson has a soft spot for the magical ski town of Aspen, Colorado – she grew up nearby and her family often returns during the holiday season. Aspen, tucked into the Rocky Mountains region of the United States, is most loved for its fluffy snow, holiday festivities and world-class slopes. Summers are also a favourite time to visit as the temperatures are mild and the great outdoors begs to be explored. Hiking, river rafting and camping are all popular activities, as well as riding the Silver Queen Gondola - perfect for a sweeping view of the region.
Wellington, New Zealand
Ed Sheeran has a thing for New Zealand. In 2017, while taking a ‘gap year’ from his career, the British singer spent some time in the country and reportedly got to love Wellington - rumour has it the Thinking Out Loud singer even inquired about becoming a citizen. The Kiwi capital is located at the southern end of the North Island and is famous for its food, live music, mild weather and friendly locals. It’s also a great starting point for hikes around Mount Victoria and wine tours around Malborough, making it a popular stop-off.
Mykonos, Greece
Hawaii-born X Factor judge and former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger loves Mykonos in Greece - she’s visited the Mediterranean island on more than one occasion. Nicknamed ‘the island of the winds’, Mykonos is most recognised for its 16th-century windmills by day, and large nightclub scene by night. It’s also a magnet for its turquoise waters and white sand beaches – try Agrari Beach for total seclusion. Greece’s most glamorous island, Mykonos is a favourite destination for more celebrities than Nicole – Leonardo DiCaprio, Ariana Grande and Gerard Butler have also visited. The island can be reached from Athens via plane or ferry.
